5 Tips To Become A Kickass Day Worker

5 Tips To Become A Kickass Day Worker

If you’re just starting out , daywork is your best bet to find a job in yachting. On the other hand, if you’re an experienced yachtie, daywork can be a flexible means of work in between jobs or turn into freelance opportunities.

Either way, it is dangerously easy to be labeled as a bad day worker. Yet, extremely easy to become a good one. Here is how to beat the odds.

1. Arrive Early

It never hurts to be early. It will always hurt to be late. Plan to wait on bridges, hit traffic, go through security or pay for parking. Especially as a yachtie who may or may not have a reliable means of transportation.

If you’re too early and no one is on deck, do not board unless you’ve been given permission. When you do arrive early just send them a text. This short time before starting work is a spectacular time to bond with crew.

2. Dress Appropriate

Depending on your role for the day make sure to dress appropriate and even bring a change of clothes. More recently I’ve noticed arriving in a polo isn’t as customary anymore depending on your role for the day. Though still wear a clean cut yachting style, shirt, shorts, belt, socks and shoes.

Also you totally still can wear a polo just be ready to change right away unless there will be guests.

3. Come Prepared

Without a doubt you should bring: a change of clothes (work clothes and or polo), sunscreen, hat, a water bottle, sunglasses, wallet, deck/interior shoes and whatever else they mention you might need!

Additionally, bring a couple printed CV’s. You never know who you will run into on the docks, be connected to or even see your hard work from another boat.

4. If You Don’t Know, JUST ASK!

Remember you are not full time crew. You’re just helping out. It’s okay if some things aren’t clear to you. If that’s the case, JUST ASK! Going on and most likely doing more work, doing something wrong or wasting everyones time isn’t going to help anyone.

5. Work Hard & Banter On

Unfortunately, yachting is all about who you know. Funny enough it’s a very small industry, so creating a solid working relationship with crew members can go a long way.

Remember the boat is taking a chance on you. They obviously need immediate help, though you never know who is going to respond to a Facebook or Daywork123 ad. Hence, decent work and positive attitude go a long way.

Now Keep Working!

Overall, if you follow these 5 tips, you will be milestones ahead of the general daywork population. Yet, even doing all of this, still doesn’t guarantee you a job. But after enough day work it will.

Like I before, Landing Your First Job is a numbers game. Simply keep up the good work and you’ll be living large like Kyle!
